**Dr. Borchert is the leading researcher in the world on Optic Nerve Hypoplasia. He has seen more cases, more situations, and has more answers on ONH, than any other doctor in the world..and lucky us, he is right here in L.A.**
On Sept. 1, 2011, we had our first appointment with Dr. Borchert. He did a VEP test and also took pictures of the back of his eyes. Mason was sedated for pretty much the entire day.
With the pictures, we were able to see extremely far back into the eye. Dr. Borchert explained to us that Mason's nerves are extremely small, and in cases like this he will most likely never read words in a book, or drive a car and things of the sort, which we pretty much already knew. In very rare cases, there are children who were able to read, even with such small nerves, and he believes it depends on where the nerves stem from.
The VEP(Visual Evoked Potential) test, they do two things. First they have a black and white checkered pattern that they make bigger and bigger and examine whether Mason has any reaction, which he did not. Second, they do a series of flashing lights, and measure the response to that. Mason does definitely have light perception! It was a really great experience, and we are so blessed to live just an hour away from Dr. Borchert. He has a wonderful team of people he works with, who are there for us as a family, with any questions or concerns we may have. You can tell they truely care about each child and their family.
My son,Mason, was diagnosed with ONH(optic nerve hypoplasia)at 5 months. ?ONH? Underdeveloped optic nerves, resulting in impaired to no vision, and possible hormone deficiencies, developmental delay, and brain malformations I want to create awareness and support for him,& all other children and their loved ones. Never forget to always be positive, never lose hope, there is always a BRIGHT SIDE,& where there is love there is life.
